A sugar alcohol that is used as a sugar substitute.
It can be extracted from birch wood, raspberries, plums, and corn.
Absorbed more slowly than sugar, it helps maintain steady levels of
insulin and blood sugar. Xylitol discourages tooth decay by replacing
dietary sugars. Sugar and artificial sweeteners are fermented by
plaque-forming organisms in the mouth. When these bacteria ingest
Xylitol, their growth and ability to produce plaque becomes severely
impaired. Xylitol may also actively aid in repairing minor cavities
caused by dental caries. Helps prevents recurrent sinus, middle ear and
bronchial infections: Xylitol inhibits the growth of bacteria, plain
and simple.
